Teaching History and Education
My education:
I grew up in Lake City, Florida, and graduated from Columbia High School and Lake City Community
College. I then attended the University of Florida (Go Gators!) and graduated from the University of Florida’
s College of Education Proteach Program with my Bachelor of Arts in Education in December of 1988 and
my Master of Education in December of 1989. I have specializations in English and reading.
My Florida certification is current and is in elementary education and middle grades English.
My teaching experience:
When I graduated from college, I did a couple of semesters of substitute teaching, both in Gainesville, FL,
and Lake City, FL. I then was fortunate to be hired by Lake City Community College as an adjunct. I taught
a writing class for two semesters and a literature class for one semester.
From there I went on to teach at Suwannee Middle School in Live Oak, FL, where I taught for seven years.
I taught eighth grade and sixth grade language arts.
Our son was born in July of 1998 and I did not go back to full-time teaching. I was blessed to be offered a
position with St. Leo University, Lake City location, in the fall of 1999, teaching education courses to junior
and senior education majors.
We moved to Jacksonville in 2001 and I began teaching at the Orange Park St. Leo location shortly
afterward. I have continued to teach for St. Leo since that time. I taught my first distance learning (on-line)
course for St. Leo in 2007.
My last semester with St. Leo was Fall 2008. I resigned my position in order to pursue my dream of working
with horses as my profession.
Our Homeschool Journey
The 2008-2009 school year will mark the beginning of our 6th year teaching our children.
. Our son will be in the fourth/fifth grade, and our daughter will be in the second grade.
Homeschooling has been a joy and a challenge. Most days are great, but there are those
days when Amy thinks she wants to "put them in school". However, she wouldn't trade this
job for anything.
Amy is blessed and pleased to say that she has the full support and trust of her husband.
He is a great help.
Thank you for considering Amy for your testing/tutoring/academic needs.
Amy's teaching philosophy and core beliefs:
The foundation for these courses is the belief that God is the Creator of the universe and everything in it. It
is my goal to present to my students a "Biblical worldview": Looking at the world from the perspective of the
Bible.
I am convinced that because of original sin carried out in the garden of Eden by the first Adam, it was
necessary for Jesus Christ, the last Adam, to die in order to pay the penalty for our sins.
We can easily see that it is because of the penalty for sin that we have death and pain in this universe. It is
only through our acceptance of Jesus Christ that we are "born again", and have eternal life. At the time we
are born again, the Holy Spirit indwells each believer.
We live with the promise and hope of the second coming of Christ, at which time there will be no more pain,
death, or tears.
(Scripture references to come...)
I accept and teach the theory of a young earth, as explained in the Bible. I believe the scientific evidence
gives proof for the belief in this theory. My teaching will counter evolutionary theory.
I do not believe in evolution. In order for evolution to be correct, there had to be death before original sin.
This is contrary to the Bible's teachings.
However, I do accept natural selection, which is not evolution, nor does it prove evolution. We can observe
natural selection in our world around us today, and I believe it accounts for the variations we see among
species and in the human race.
