Testing Descriptions
Brigance testing • This test is published by Curriculum Associates. I have the revised 1999 version. • I tell parents that this test is a "snapshot" of what your child knows. For example, Instead of 50 math questions, the student works just enough for me to see whether or not he has an understanding of the skill...usually 2 to 4 problems per skill. • This test also finds your child's general reading level as defined by grade level. The child reads only a few short passages. Often, this test will alert the parent and myself if there are problems and then further testing and/or tutoring can be recommended. • This test takes about 2 hours of my time PER STUDENT. I give the student breaks as needed. I have tried to condense the time, but it always ends up taking two hours per student. YOU MUST SIGN UP FOR 2 HOURS FOR EACH CHILD!!!!! • This is an individual test. You may drop off your child, or you may stay for the duration of your child's test. Please plan to speak with me about your child's test results for at least 15 minutes at the end of the test. Please make arrangements to have someone else watch your younger children who are not being tested (ie. 5 years and under). I only need to speak with you privately for about 15 minutes. You and I need to be able to concentrate when we are discussing your child's results, and younger children can be distracting. Portfolio Evaluation • Items indicated must be included in the portfolio. This is what the state of Florida requires
*Up - to - date log book (or dated lesson plans) with lessons and activities recorded. *Reading list for student maintained. *Textbook and curriculum list maintained. *Samples of student’s work throughout the year for each subject in chronological order for ease in showing educational progress. *Samples of any writings, worksheets, workbooks, or creative materials used or developed by the student. *Interview with student (Bring pictures of a project for student to talk about.)
• The portfolio evaluation takes about 1 hour of my time PER STUDENT. During this time I will also answer questions/address any concerns that you have about home schooling.
Please make arrangements to have someone else watch your younger children are not being evaluated.
Iowa Test of Basic Skills-A (ITBS-A) or other standardized achievement testing: This test generally last six hours. I prefer to complete it in a group setting of no more than six students. It takes two mornings to complete.
